The 4-year B.Tech. (Power Engineering) course being offered by NPTI is the first of its kind in India. The program is directed at the young aspirants who are looking for a bright career in the Power Industry, the backbone off all industrial activities. The program coverage includes the regular inputs generally provided in B.Tech., programs and lays special emphasis on Indian Electricity Act 1956, preparing skilled Engineering Executives for the Power Sector.
The main objective is to prepare skilled Engineering Executives for Power Sector and allied industries. The course is designed to have equivalence to Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering proficiency and recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
This course satisfies the mandatory requirement of Gazette Notification issued by Govt. of India, which stipulates that:
The participant sucessfully completing this course are licensed to operate Thermal Power Stations (Including Captive Power Plant) as per statutory requirement under Indian Electricity Act. 1956 {Rule 3 2A} amended in 1981.
This course started at Durgapur Institute from financial year 2002-2003 along with other institutes and approved by AICTE and affiliated to West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT). Admission to this course is open through WBJEE / AIEEE.
Admissions are made to the 1st year of B.Tech.(Power Engineering) through Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by GGSIPU in May/June every year with an intake of 60 students.
Admission to NPTI (NR) in the 2nd year is through the Lateral Entry Examination conducted by GGSIPU along with the Common Entrance Test for 1st year admissions for Diploma holder candidates. There are 6 separate seats for Lateral Entry Candidates (apart from 60 for CET candidates)
